Make the benefit of bin sponsorship irresistible

More tips from our recently published Tips to securing Commercial Sponsorship booklet which is available FREE from Amberol

Keeping public spaces well-maintained and looking their best costs money and time. Planters, litter bins, play equipment and seating don’t come for free, so any support to help improve public spaces is to be welcomed.

When it comes to bins, attracting sponsorship is certainly a harder sell than getting it for a beautiful self-watering planter that brings vibrant colour to an area. In some way they may be at opposite ends of the scale, but both a bin and a planter help to improve their surroundings in a different way. Many organisations would rather be associated with a planter than a litter bin, but cleanliness and tidiness are an equally important part of the street scene. So, it’s really important to spell out the benefits for both a business and the community in which it’s located.

Although a challenge, there are ways to make sponsoring a litter initiative appealing. Here are some tips to persuade local organisations to get involved in and help in the challenge of creating a litter free environment:

Bigger picture

Instead of making the focus solely on the bin sponsorship, explain how it is part of a wider anti-litter initiative for the area. Sell it as ‘making our town/city/village a better place’ rather than focusing on negative associations with litter. Business will be more likely to get on board with a scheme than just a sole bin sponsorship.

Identify the culprits

Local councils could possibly help you in identifying areas where litter is a problem. It would then make sense to target businesses in these areas and inform particular culprits of the influence that they are having on the areas litter problem.

It is difficult for businesses to turn down offering support if they are made aware of the undoubted commercial benefits they will experience should there be a reduction of litter in their area.

Publicity for sponsors

Publicly acknowledging support is probably what businesses will want most from the sponsorship. If they’re part of helping reduce litter in the area, they will undoubtedly encounter some positive PR from the local press so be sure make them aware of this when you ask for their support.
You could even design some certificates or window stickers for businesses involved in the clean-up campaign to put up on their site.

Explain the options

When you speak to local organisations, their first thought might be that they will be sponsoring a typical black bin. However, there are more options open to them and they might be more partial to sponsoring a bin that’s more eye-catching.

It might be worth investing in some more unusual bin types that will appeal to other potential sponsors to give you another option to propose. Amberol’s talking animal bins are successful in places where young people meet, learn and play. These may be a more convincing option for some businesses.
