One of the questions we’re often asked by our customers is how to get the very best from an Amberol planter.
From choosing the right compost to planting up and watering your display, following a few simple planting steps will help keep your Amberol self-watering planter in peak performance throughout the seasons.
That’s why we’ve created a new planting guide, packed with practical advice to help you get the most from your Amberol planter and keep your displays.
We will also be making the guide easier to access shortly with new QR code stickers being applied to all products linking directly to the guide, so you can quickly view it online or print a copy at home to keep handy.
For the best performance from an Amberol self-watering planter, we recommend using a high-quality compost with a consistent particle size and minimal wood fibre content.
The structure of the compost plays an important role in maintaining effective capillary action. It also helps prevent excessive compaction or waterlogging as the compost settles over time.
A high-quality compost is more likely to:

Step 1: Fill with compost
Fill the planter with high-quality compost, gently firming it as you go. Avoid over-compacting the compost, as this can restrict root growth and prevent water from moving freely through the growing medium.
Step 2: Add your plants
Arrange the plants to create your chosen display. Make sure the roots are fully covered and that each plant is positioned firmly within the compost.
Step 3: Water thoroughly
Once planting is complete, water the display thoroughly from above. This helps settle the compost and establishes good contact between the plant roots and the compost.
Step 4: Fill the reservoir
Finally, fill the planter’s self-watering reservoir according to its instructions. This allows the self-watering system to begin operating as designed.
Amberol’s unique Aquafeed™ self-watering system contains a series of capillary action wicks that ‘suck’ water up from a reservoir onto a dispersal mat, which then distributes the water evenly across the compost, keeping it moist at all times.
Self-watering planters are a great asset to facilities managers and gardening groups alike as they only need to be watered once or twice a week.
